A serial killer is on the loose in Atlanta and Scott Hayes is the Atlanta PD's primary detective on the case. The strain of spending months to find and stop the killer takes a toll on his marriage. His wife leaves him. There are choices he must make if he wants her back, but first he has to catch the killer. A strange clue leads him to the first real suspect he has, a handsome, wealthy bachelor named William Stark, but he has no proof that Stark is the killer even though his experience tells him differently. William Stark is more than a serial killer. He’s also an assassin for an organization who has developed nano-technology that enables them to implant Stark’s consciousness into a host body. The people selected as hosts are those close to the target: a spouse, a brother, or even a business associate. Once in control of the host body, Stark publically assassinates the target and restores the host’s original consciousness. The host wakes up having no memory of the event, but the witnesses and police have no doubt the unsuspecting host is the guilty murderer. It’s the perfect crime until a series of mishaps leave Stark’s consciousness in the bodies of two hosts and there are three versions of him on the loose. Stark realizes that all of his secrets, fears, and memories—his total life—are no longer his alone. He cannot accept this, and his two copies feel the same way, but with different agendas. Due to imperfections in the technology, after forty-eight hours, the host's own genetic and hormonal makeup begins to alter Stark’s implanted personality. One copy devolves into a lunatic, while the other gains a conscience. The deranged copy hungers for his original body. The sane one realizes he must stop the others before more people die. All three are on path to destroying the each other. A strange man comes to Detective Hayes claiming to be William Stark—sort of—with an unbelievable tale about a secret group, assassinations, and transferring consciousnesses, While Hayes decides whether to arrest him for being the serial killer or bundle him up in a straight jacket, the man tells him who Stark’s next victim is—the detective's own wife. Hayes discovers that Stark has already abducted her and must accept the help of Stark’s copy if he wants to save his wife.
